NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Tuesday held its second pre-release consultative workshop on the base revision of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Consumer Price Index (CPI), and Index of Industrial Production (IIP) at Bharat Mandapam here, aiming to enhance transparency and stakeholder engagement before the launch of the revised data series.
The workshop follows the first consultation held in Mumbai on November 26 and focused on sharing proposed methodological and structural changes with economists, data users, and policymakers. The revised GDP and IIP series, with 2022-23 as the base year, are scheduled for release in February. The new CPI series, with 2024 as the base year, will be released on February 12, 2026, while the new CPI series with 2026 as the base year will be released on May 28, 2026, respectively.
NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman K. Bery, the chief guest, emphasized the importance of credible and reliable statistics, stating that accurate data is crucial as India progresses toward upper-middle-income status. MoSPI Secretary Saurabh Garg highlighted data-driven policymaking as central to achieving the “Viksit Bharat 2047” goal and outlined key changes, including greater use of GST and PFMS data, improved informal sector measurement, and more granular IIP compilation.
Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran welcomed the consultative approach, noting the challenges of measuring the informal sector and stressing the importance of transparent and consistent methodologies aligned with international standards.
