New Delhi: The National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released its annual statistical publication titled “Statistical Report on Value of Output from Agriculture and Allied Sectors (2011–12 to 2023–24)”. This comprehensive dataset offers granular insights into India’s agriculture sector performance, covering value of output (GVO) from crops, livestock, forestry, and fisheries, at both current and constant (2011–12) prices.
Key Highlights from the NSO Agriculture Output Report:

GVA Soars by 225%: Gross Value Added (GVA) of agriculture and allied sectors at current prices rose from ₹1,502 thousand crore in 2011–12 to ₹4,878 thousand crore in 2023–24.

Real Growth in Output: At constant prices, GVO increased from ₹1,908 thousand crore to ₹2,949 thousand crore, reflecting a 54.6% growth in real terms.

Crop Sector Dominates: With ₹1,595 thousand crore in constant prices, crops held a 54.1% share of total agriculture GVO in 2023–24. Cereals and fruits & vegetables made up over 52% of this.

Paddy & Wheat Still on Top: These two cereals account for 85% of total cereal output by value. Top contributing states: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana, and Haryana.

Banana Overtakes Mango: Banana emerged as the highest contributor in the fruit segment (₹47.0K crore), surpassing mango for the first time since 2011–12.

Potato Leads Vegetables: Consistent leadership in vegetable output with GVO rising from ₹21.3K crore in 2011–12 to ₹37.2K crore in 2023–24.

Floriculture Doubles: Strong diversification in horticulture, with floriculture output rising from ₹17.4K crore to ₹28.1K crore.

Livestock Sector Grows Rapidly: Output rose from ₹488K crore to ₹919K crore. Milk remains dominant, though its share dipped slightly; meat’s share increased from 19.7% to 24.1%.

Forestry & Logging: Value increased to ₹227K crore, with industrial wood’s share rising to 70.2%.

Fisheries on the Rise: The sub-sector’s share in agricultural GVA jumped from 4.2% to 7.0% in 2023–24. Marine fish output overtook inland fish for the first time.
