New Delhi: In a major digital leap for India’s energy sector, the Ministry of Power has announced the development of the India Energy Stack (IES) — a secure, interoperable, and standardized Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) aimed at transforming how electricity is produced, managed, and consumed across the country.
The initiative will serve as a digital backbone for the power sector, much like Aadhaar has for identity and UPI for payments. It will support India’s transition toward net-zero emissions, integrate renewables more effectively, and empower consumers with transparent, data-driven services.
The India Energy Stack will include:
-
Unique IDs for consumers, grid assets, and energy transactions
-
Real-time, consent-based data sharing across stakeholders
-
Open APIs to enable seamless integration of utilities and startups
-
Tools for DISCOM efficiency, energy forecasting, and market participation
“There is an urgent need to build robust digital infrastructure in the power sector to manage growing demand, ensure grid stability, and empower consumers,” said Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, Minister for Power. “The India Energy Stack will unlock seamless, secure, and consumer-centric services for every citizen.”
To operationalize IES, the Ministry will conduct a 12-month Proof of Concept (PoC) with utilities in Mumbai, Gujarat, and Delhi. A pilot version of the Utility Intelligence Platform (UIP)—an AI-driven dashboard for DISCOMs and policymakers—will also be tested.
Key Outcomes Expected
-
India Energy Stack White Paper to be released for public feedback
-
Pilot launch of UIP with real-time energy analytics
-
National rollout roadmap for IES by mid-2026
The Ministry has constituted a high-level Task Force comprising experts from the energy, regulatory, and technology sectors to guide the initiative’s design and implementation.
