VARANASI — The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, have established a Centre of Excellence to advance research in next-generation telecommunications, including 6G, artificial intelligence, quantum communications and cybersecurity.
The centre, C-DOT’s sixth such facility in India, aims to bridge academic research and industry needs through joint technology development, knowledge sharing and specialised workforce training, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Communications on Thursday.
The initiative will focus on advanced wireless communications, AI-native networks, large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, integrated sensing and communication, and quantum and post-quantum communication technologies.
The memorandum of understanding was signed in the presence of C-DOT Executive Vice President Pankaj Kumar Dalela and IIT (BHU) Director Amit Patra. The centre was inaugurated following the signing ceremony.
C-DOT CEO Rajkumar Upadhyay said the partnership would support the development of indigenous technologies for India’s digital infrastructure. Patra said the collaboration would help researchers and students translate academic work into practical telecommunications solutions.
The new centre expands C-DOT’s existing network of Centres of Excellence at IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Roorkee, IIT Hyderabad and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, through the Foundation for Science, Innovation and Development (FSID).
The initiative comes as India seeks to strengthen domestic research and development capabilities in advanced telecommunications and reduce reliance on imported technologies.
