New Delhi: Northern Coalfields Limited has a new captain at a time when India’s coal sector is being pushed to produce more, modernise faster and move toward cleaner, technology-driven mining.

*N. Franklin Jayakumar* assumed charge Tuesday as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), the Singrauli-based subsidiary of Coal India Limited.

Jayakumar brings more than three decades of experience across mechanised underground and opencast coal and lignite mining operations in India and overseas — a career built largely around the operational side of the energy sector.

His immediate previous assignment was as Director (Technical), Operations, at South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL). Under his operational leadership, the company achieved strong performance in coal production, offtake and overburden removal while pursuing mine modernisation and mechanisation.

But Jayakumar’s profile extends beyond conventional production targets.

At SECL, he championed initiatives spanning solar power, green mobility, coal gasification and energy storage, while promoting technology-led automation and greater transparency in coal sampling. The combination reflects the changing priorities of the coal industry, where productivity increasingly has to be matched with technology, efficiency and environmental responsibility.

His professional journey also includes significant assignments at Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited, where he served in several technical and operational positions, including Executive Director (Coal Coordination) and Project Head of the Talabira II and III mines.

He was also associated with NLC India’s ambitious *lignite-to-methanol project*, giving him exposure to emerging pathways for adding value to domestic energy resources.

Jayakumar started his career with Singareni Collieries Company Limited, working in mechanised underground and opencast mines. He subsequently headed mining operations at a coal mine in Indonesia before moving to NLC India, where he handled a series of operational and technical responsibilities.

Academically, Jayakumar holds a degree in Mining Engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University, Chennai. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in Environmental Engineering and Management from the Central University of Hyderabad and an MBA in Human Resource Management from Alagappa University, Tamil Nadu.

At NCL, his experience across large-scale mining operations, technology adoption and sustainability is expected to bring an operationally focused approach to one of Coal India’s key production companies.

For Singrauli, the appointment marks the arrival of a mining professional whose career has been shaped by the realities of the pit, the machinery and the production line — while increasingly embracing the technologies and sustainability imperatives reshaping India’s coal economy.
