DUBLIN: India’s ambassador to Ireland on Wednesday welcomed the support of Ireland’s human rights watchdog in dealing with a rise in racist attacks on members of the Indian community.
Ambassador Akhilesh Mishra met Liam Herrick, chief commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, at the Indian Embassy in Dublin. The two discussed recent incidents targeting Indian nationals and emphasized the need for coordinated measures to safeguard their rights and safety.
Mishra said Herrick’s visit underscored the importance of “a productive exchange of views” and concerted action to protect not only Indians but all vulnerable communities in Ireland.
Herrick briefed Mishra on institutional steps being taken to monitor and respond to racism-related incidents in workplaces, schools, and public life. He assured the embassy of “full cooperation and support” for the Indian diaspora, which he said contributes significantly to Ireland’s economy, technology, healthcare and cultural vibrancy.
Mishra thanked Herrick for sharing the commission’s multifaceted efforts and expressed interest in deeper cooperation between Ireland’s equality body and India’s National Human Rights Commission. Such collaboration, he said, could include mutual learning, shared strategies, and innovative approaches to tackling human rights violations.
