NEW DELHI :NITI Aayog, in partnership with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and UNDP, released the second edition of the North Eastern Region District SDG Index (2023–24). The report shows that 85% of the 121 districts saw an increase in their composite Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) score.

All districts of Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura achieved “Front Runner” status. Hnahthial (Mizoram) ranked highest with a score of 81.43, while Longding (Arunachal Pradesh) ranked lowest at 58.71. Sikkim demonstrated the most consistent performance, while Nagaland saw three of its districts enter the top 10.

Significant gains were recorded in SDG 3 (Good Health & Well-being), with 93 districts improving. Assam showed across-the-board progress in Zero Hunger, Quality Education, Clean Water & Sanitation, and Decent Work & Economic Growth.

The index, based on NITI Aayog’s national SDG methodology, is designed to monitor district-level progress and guide targeted development interventions across the eight northeastern states.
