New Delhi: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice & Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to position India as a global centre for arbitration at the National Conference on “Institutional Arbitration: An Effective Framework for Dispute Resolution” held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
“India will become the arbitration hub,” the Minister asserted, citing the country’s rich tradition of consensual dispute resolution and growing legal infrastructure.
Organised by the Department of Legal Affairs in collaboration with ONGC and the India International Arbitration Centre (IIAC), the conference brought together legal experts, PSU leaders, and government officials to promote structured institutional arbitration over ad hoc mechanisms.
Justice Hemant Gupta (Retd.), Chairperson, IIAC, highlighted the transition from ICADR to IIAC and urged PSUs to incorporate institutional arbitration clauses in contracts. ONGC Chairman Shri Arun Kumar Singh called for faster processes, stating, “Timeliness, not timelessness, should be the ethos of our legal systems.”
Dr. Anju Rathi Rana, Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs, detailed reforms aimed at strengthening IIAC’s global standing, while K. Moses Chalai, Secretary, DPE, stressed arbitration’s role in economic efficiency.
With over 150 delegates and 1,600+ virtual attendees, the conference included four focused technical sessions covering PSU arbitration, IIAC regulations, best practices, and global benchmarks — reinforcing India’s next leap toward becoming an arbitration powerhouse.
