RAJAM, Andhra Pradesh: The Ministry of Education has officially notified GMR Institute of Technology (GMRIT) as a Deemed to be University under the UGC Act, marking a major milestone for the Vizianagaram-based engineering hub.
Established in 1997 by the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, the CSR arm of the GMR Group, GMRIT has evolved from an autonomous institute into a multidisciplinary university. The elevation allows the institution to design its own curriculum, launch new programs in applied sciences and healthcare, and deepen international research collaborations.
The 130-acre campus currently holds high rankings, including a presence in the Times Higher Education Rankings 2026 and consistent NAAC and NBA accreditations. With the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport nearby, officials say the university is positioned to become a scalable global education hub.
“This status provides GMRIT with the strategic autonomy to launch multidisciplinary programs and build global collaborations in line with India’s future workforce needs,” said Ashwini Saxena, CEO of GMR Varalakshmi Foundation.
GMRIT maintains a robust placement record across IT, energy, and infrastructure sectors. Moving forward, the university plans to expand into medical and allied health sciences to further support India’s skill development ecosystem.
