NEW DELHI: Stefan Priesner on Friday formally assumed charge as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in India after presenting his credentials to the Government of India, the UN said.
Appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Priesner will lead the UN Country Team in India and coordinate the UN’s support for India’s development priorities and progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
He presented his credentials to the Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs during a ceremony in New Delhi on Thursday.
“I am honored to take up this responsibility in India,” Priesner said, adding that the UN will work closely with the government and partners to support inclusive and sustainable development.
Priesner has nearly three decades of experience in international development and UN leadership roles. He most recently served as UN Resident Coordinator in Iran from 2021 to 2025. He previously held the same post in Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore, and earlier in Uzbekistan.
An Austrian national, Priesner holds a master’s degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins University and a master’s degree in law from the University of Vienna.
