NEW DELHI: Union Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday outlined a performance-driven overhaul of state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and detailed plans to modernise India’s postal network as a digital services backbone.
At an informal media briefing at Sanchar Bhawan, Scindia said the government’s approach to reviving BSNL is shifting from capital support to measurable service standards, with a focus on achieving “Six Sigma” benchmarks across operations.
“The revival of BSNL is not just about 4G and 5G deployment; it is about a cultural shift toward service excellence,” Scindia said, describing Junior Telecom Officers as the “frontline warriors” of India’s connectivity drive.
He said feedback from field-level officers has informed recent policy adjustments aimed at improving service quality and accountability within the telecom operator.
The minister also detailed the transformation of India Post into a next-generation digital gateway. Measures include rationalisation of Railway Mail Services to reduce delivery delays, equipping postal staff with digital banking tools to expand financial inclusion in rural areas and converting traditional post offices into “N-Gen” centres capable of handling e-commerce and government-to-citizen services.
Looking ahead, Scindia said India is engaged in discussions with European partners, including Ireland and Germany, on shared standards for emerging technologies such as 6G and quantum communications.
He reiterated the government’s target of achieving 100% 4G coverage across all villages by mid-2026, describing it as the foundation for India’s ambition to become a $5 trillion economy.
