NEW DELHI: In a significant move to enhance infrastructure in India’s Northeast, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) has sanctioned a ₹45.31 crore project for construction of the Mangaldoi–Mazikuchi road in Assam. The 15-kilometre stretch will be developed under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) – Roads.
The new route, running from KM 11+000 to KM 26+200, will directly connect Darrang District Headquarters (Mangaldoi) to Bhergaon, Subdivision HQ of Udalguri District. The upgrade will reduce the travel distance by 7.2 kilometres and is expected to significantly improve regional accessibility.
Key highlights of the project include improved access to at least seven educational institutions, including Deomornoi College, and better connectivity to notable cultural and historical landmarks such as Pathurighat Krishak Shahid Memorial, Khotora Satra, Lakhimpur Pukhuri, and Ramgaon Pukhuri.
Funded entirely by the Government of India, NESIDS (Roads) is a core component of the broader NESIDS framework, which aims to accelerate infrastructure growth in the North Eastern Region. The scheme is implemented with close coordination between MDoNER and respective state governments.
MDoNER currently spearheads regional development through four flagship schemes — PM-DevINE, NESIDS (Roads), NESIDS (Other Than Roads & Infrastructure), and North Eastern Council (NEC) initiatives.
