NEW DELHI: Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani on Wednesday called for striking a balance between workers’ dignity and economic growth while inaugurating a national program on labour law reforms in the capital.
The event, organized by Rightmen Services India, brought together policymakers, corporate leaders, trade unions, and academics to discuss delays in implementing the four Labour Codes enacted in 2019 and 2020.
In his address, Venkataramani underlined the ideological foundations of India’s labour laws and the need to harmonize progress with social justice. Manoj Kumar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Law & Justice, stressed capacity building in states for smoother rollout, while K.P. Mahadevaswamy, SCOPE chairman and NBCC CMD, pointed to the responsibility of public enterprises in ensuring effective enforcement.
Three technical sessions, chaired by senior HR leaders from GAIL, SJVN, and IFFCO, featured lively debates. Representatives from Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) pressed for immediate implementation of the Code on Wages and Code on Social Security, while the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) sought review of all four codes. Industry leaders argued that faster adoption would unlock long-term economic growth.
Executives from leading PSUs, banks, and cooperatives — including Powergrid, HAL, REC, NHPC, NBCC, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank, and IFFCO — joined the discussions.
The program was curated by Vinod Behari, CEO of Rightmen Services India, who closed the deliberations with a vote of thanks.
