New Delhi: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Monday hosted a brainstorming workshop with experts from government, academia, industry and research bodies to chart a framework for measuring India’s knowledge economy.
The session, organized under the Technical Advisory Group (TAG), drew more than 70 participants from government, academia, research, industry, and policy think tanks.
Delivering the inaugural address, Dr. Saurabh Garg, secretary, MoSPI, stressed the importance of capturing the contribution of knowledge products, including indigenous and traditional forms, to the GDP. Dr. R. Balasubramanium, member (human resources), Capacity Building Commission and TAG chair, said the initiative marks the first step toward a comprehensive Knowledge Economy Satellite Account aligned with international best practices.
Breakout sessions examined five domains: digital knowledge; conventional knowledge and R&D; business processes; creative and cultural knowledge; and indigenous and community knowledge. Participants proposed a taxonomy of knowledge items, ranging from weather forecasts and legal judgments to traditional healing, songs, dance and drama, while acknowledging challenges in valuation.
MoSPI said it will commission studies through research organizations, under TAG’s supervision, to advance the measurement framework and urged experts to continue sharing insights.
