GUWAHATI : The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has expanded its Sanchar Mitra Scheme nationwide, enlisting college students as digital ambassadors to promote telecom literacy, cybersecurity awareness, and responsible mobile usage.
In its first outreach under the revamped scheme, Assam LSA collaborated with 18 engineering institutions—including IIT Guwahati, NIT Silchar, and IIIT Guwahati—at a session held in BSNL Bhawan, Guwahati.
The session was led by Sunita Chandra, Advisor, DG Telecom; Suresh Puri, ADG and Head of Assam LSA; and Hemendra Kumar Sharma, DDG (Media) and DoT Spokesperson.
Chandra emphasized building a bridge between citizens and telecom services through youth engagement. Puri highlighted the scheme’s Connect, Educate, Innovate pillars, while Sharma stressed the role of Sanchar Mitras in combating digital fraud and raising grassroots awareness.
Launched as a national movement by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, the scheme provides structured training to student volunteers in 5G, 6G, AI, and cybersecurity. Top performers may be offered internships and roles in flagship telecom projects.
